WHAT CAN BE DONE TO TREAT THEM?
It used to be that painful surgery, or vein stripping, was the only way to remove varicose veins. Today, there are a number of non-surgical procedures available to treat varicose veins.
NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OPTIONS:
Microsclerotherapy
Microsclerotherpay utilizes a liquid solution called Sclerosant –
an FDA-approved drug specifically developed for use in
vein therapies – it is injected directly into the affected
veins. This causes the vessels to collapse and
eventually disappear.
Foam and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
In these procedures, the physician uses ultrasound
technology to visualize the underlying vein and
monitor the injection. In foam sclerotherapy,
the Sclerosant is mixed with air to create a foamy
substance. In a procedure very similar to microsclerotherapy,
the substance is injected into the vein. The foam Sclerosant
adheres to the vein wall for a longer period of time, making
it a more suitable treatment for larger veins.
Laser Vein treatment
Laser vein treatment is recommended for the treatment of spider
veins. Fast, safe and very effective, laser treatment involves using a special light to target the unwanted vessels, making them break apart and disappear.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)
EVLT is now the "gold standard" for varicose vein treatment.
This procedure can be performed in our office, usually in about one hour or less. EVLT uses targeted laser energy to seal the
vein shut.During the procedure, you are awake and your leg
is anesthetized. A thin fiber is inserted into the vein and using ultrasound for guidance, pulses of laser energy are released into the vein to seal it completely. Patients typically walk out of the office and return to his or her normal daily activity. EVLT at a Glance:
- Treatment is usually one hour or less
- No general anesthesia
- Covered by most insurance providers
- No scarring
- Immediate relief of most symptoms
- In-office procedure
- Return to normal activity almost
immediately - FDA approved
SURGICAL TREATMENTS
Microphlebectomy
As a treatment for varicose veins, microphlebectomy is a surgical procedure where small incisions are made and pieces of the affected vein are removed from the leg. This technique is different from vein stripping. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and the patient is usually asked to wear a compression stocking for up
to one week after the procedure and to avoid strenuous activity during that time.
