Welcome to Cross County Cardiology

Radiofrequency ablation therapy

Radiofrequency ablation (sometimes referred to as Venefit™ or VNUS Closure), is a minimally invasive procedure that uses the heat from radiofrequency waves to seal varicose veins and spider veins. After treatment, the sealed-off veins disintegrate and are absorbed into surrounding tissue, while blood is re-routed to other nearby veins.

During the procedure, your varicose vein doctors in Hudson County insert a catheter into the affected vein through a tiny incision made in the groin area, and then guide it into place using ultrasound. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered through the catheter into the vein wall, heating it up and causing the vein to collapse and seal shut.

Radiofrequency ablation is commonly performed in your Bergen County vein doctor’s offices as an outpatient procedure, and requires only the use of a local anesthetic. Recovery time is relatively short and most healthy patients can return to their daily activities the following day. Most patients notice an improvement in their symptoms within 2 weeks of the procedure.

The procedure itself takes between 45-60 minutes, but you can expect to spend around 3 hours in the Cross County Cardiology offices as you are prepared for the procedure, and as you recover from it. Afterwards, your doctor may advice you to walk regularly, to avoid standing for prolonged periods of time, and to avoid strenuous activities such as heavy lifting for a few weeks.

While radiofrequency ablation is a relatively safe procedure, your doctor will explain to you the risks involved with the procedure, which include cellulitis/infection, skin burn, mild bruising and/or pain, and some loss of blood.

At CCC we give our patients access to a wide range of effective, minimally invasive vein treatment options in order to provide the best vein care in Boynton Beach. Radiofrequency ablation is one such minimally invasive therapy your vein specialist may use to destroy problem veins.

Radiofrequency ablation uses high-frequency electrical energy that travels down a small flexible tube inserted into a vein. Guided by ultrasound, radiofrequency energy is then directed through the tube and into the target vein, which causes it to collapse.

The diseased vein ultimately disappears, leaving little or no scarring. The radiofrequency ablation procedure takes less than an hour to complete, and patients enjoy a very short recovery time. Most patients can resume their normal activities (including work) the day after treatment.
