Specialized treatment
for varicose and spider veins

Bergen County vein doctors

At Cross County Cardiology, we prefer to take the time to get to know our patients. So it is likely that our Bergen County vein doctors will spend a large part of your first vein appointment chatting with you. We’ll ask about your medical history, and because vein disease is hereditary, we’ll ask about your family’s history with varicose veins or other types of vein disease as well. We’ll also ask a lot of questions to pinpoint risk factors that might increase your likelihood of developing vein disease. These include smoking, being overweight or obese, and leading a sedentary life. Naturally, we’ll also ask about any symptoms you may be experiencing, because even if you have no visible varicose veins yet, vein disease may be present and hidden, and may be causing you to experience swollen legs and ankles and other complications.

Finally, we’ll perform a normal physical examination, and then move to an in-depth examination of your veins themselves, conducted using Venous Doppler Ultrasound. This is the most advanced form of ultrasound, and allows us to look beneath the surface of your skin to see not only the veins themselves, but the blood as it flows through them to determine whether there are any blockages, or whether you show signs of venous reflux.

That is what happens when the tiny valves that control blood flow through your veins become weak and fail to close properly, allowing blood to flow backwards (in a reflux direction) and pool in your veins. It is also the primary cause of varicose veins.

If we discover that you are suffering from vein disease, we will discuss the various treatment options with you, and help you to decide among them. If you don’t have vein disease yet but have high risk factors for it, we’ll work with you to help prevent it.
